Crimewatch

From the Swavesey chouette:

Some idiot in the box (white) doubled, which was very, very wrong. Obviously I followed this up by hitting, backgammon being very, very unfair. This is a beaver, if you play them; white is 11 behind in the race and losing. At 649 stupids I claim both Blunder of the Week, and the much-coveted Swavesey Blunder Record (t-shirt not yet available). If we played beavers this would be a four figure nightmare (1209).

Usually it’s the runner doubling in this position. Although the blocker can take 5 or 6 pips further behind than a race, they often have to pass. In this example white is 14 behind and has a borderline take:

If the blocker has the mid it’s a different story, they should usually double. The trailer has to modify their racing take by around 5 or 6 pips but will often be able to take, as in this case where black is 3 behind:

Just don’t mix it up with holding the bar!

  1. Make a huge blunder, and then massively capitalising….classic Swavesey flair play in action. If this article is called crime watch, then surely doubling at this position should be called a ram raid!

  2. Very enlightening. Having T-shirts printed as I speak mine will say doubling genius!! Surely having the highest doubling PR wins?
